breaking no eggsLet s face it If you want to make a successful revolution, you ve got to organize, you ve got to have wide support, and you have to be ready to kill a lot of people, whether they deserve it or not That s why I m not for revolutions Who said you have to break eggs to make an omelet Groovy, but what if those eggs are your family or closest friends What if they are hardworking or religious farmers out in the boonies who have a different point of view than you When you agitate for change which is generally a good idea don t be surprised if you stir up a hornets nest of opposition from those who benefit from the status quo Opposition to YOU doesn t equate with being fascist. In the case of the student revolt of the 1960s and 70s, there were attempts made to organize a wide variety of supports In some ways they were successful But when bombs started going off, most people in America were not ready to go that far The would be revolutionaries were totally cut off from the general population Despite the strong opposition to racism, the military industrial complex, and the Vietnam War in large segments of America, the situation never approached a real revolutionary one America was too conservative And looking at Chinese and Russian history, just to take two examples, it wasn t such a bad thing. This book details, oh and in what painstaking form, the efforts to change America that took place back then when I was young The author tried hard to organize and to keep the spirit up He was no doubt sincere, but too endowed with the importance of his own actions It s a collection of essays and articles for radical papers he wrote at the time, essays which are now nothing if not pass He pontificates on all the issues, declares America a violent society as if we didn t know that, and takes himself and his cause as historic, worthy of our attention some half century later I took part in those efforts, but I didn t find myself a historic character, I didn t think I was making history If you read this book, you are going to get tired of the self centered, self righteous tone of angry youth At the age of 31, the author looks way back to when he was 23 or 24 Sorry, but that doesn t impress me, and I don t think it will impress many readers of the second decade of the 21st century You should look elsewhere for the very interesting and important history of those times However, if you want to know what one young radical was thinking and how the attempted change proceeded, this book could be a useful sort of guide That s it America had some very nasty aspects and it still does, but I think, if you are serious, you can choose an author who doesn t write so naively, Finally the Administration did one outrageous thing too many All I can say is Far out

An account of nonviolent civil disobedience in northern California in the Sixties Rossman was a direct action junkie his book documents through journals, newspaper articles Rossman wrote for Berkeley underground papers throughout the late Sixties period , letters, and poems, and narrates the intensifying organization of anarchistic activity, from FSM to People s park, of which Rossman was himself a leader The title is a metaphor while Rossman himself was married during the period after People s Park, the idea of a marriage, or covenant with and in a way of life, is the central idea this memoir explores It is the best book I know on the Student Movement in the U.S Goodreads Librarians Please note the incorrect title above
