Konrad Lorenz s father wanted him to be a medical doctor, but Konrad was always fascinated by animals Although he did receive a medical degree, Konrad left the field to study animals He spent many years learning about geese, raising them from egg to adult, and documenting their behavior His first goose, Martina, imprints on him and Konrad becomes her parent She follows him around the house and garden, and every afternoon they swim together in the river At night, she sleeps in a basket next to his bed Later, she meets a gentleman goose and they start their own goose family Konrad continues to study geese and learns about their vocalizations and interactions discerning what behaviors are innate and what are learned.I was seduced by the cover of this book, which shows a middle aged Konrad Lorenz being followed by a posse of geese one of which is honking at him He looks back over his shoulder with a kindly smile as his geese happily follow wherever he leads Muted pastel colors add to the friendly and accessible atmosphere of this book The illustrations of the geese in particular, are delightful very goose y in nature with many waddlings and honkings An Author s Note gives further details of Konrad s life and contribution to behavioral science he was a winner of the Nobel Prize in 1973 Readers may not be familiar with Konrad Lorenz, but his spirit of scientific curiosity, as evidenced in this picture book, will inspire them to make their own discoveries.

Elaine Greenstein writes a biography about the little known, famous scientist Konraxd Lorenz, the Goose Man This story is most appropriate for younger students and tells the delightful story of Lorenz and how his love for the geese that surrounded him led him to his life s work He became so involved with his geese, he had his prized goose Martina sleep in his room, and later on hired younger scientists to just live with the geese to understand them better The pencil and chalk illustrations reallly added to the story, as did the goose talk such as vee vee vee and carun kk This would be an good classroom resource for a unit on nature, family, or just how one s passion can lead to the work they do for the rest of their life A heart warming story, and good read

  3. Holly Mueller says:

Konrad Lorenz loved animals, especially geese He became a doctor, but what he really wanted to do was become a scientist and study animal behavior, so he devoted his time to studying geese His wife, Gretl, had to be pretty tolerant of his pet goose, Martina, who slept in their room at night and flew out of the window in the morning Lorenz founded a science of animal behavior called ethology, discovered instinctual behaviors of geese, and won the Nobel Prize in 1973 This book could be read along with MeJane by Patrick McDonnell, The Watcher Jane Goodall s Life With the Chimps by Jeanette Winter, and The Elephant Scientist by Caitlin O Connell.
